This method is described in words in a chapter entitled 'Employment of Children - Guide to Paperfolding - A Fragment' in 'Education by Development: The Second Part of the Pedagogics of the Kindergarten', translated by Josephine Jarvis, which was published by D Appleton and Company in New York in 1899.

The original German text, 'Friedrich Froebel's Gesammelte padogogische schriften' (Friedrich Froebel's Collected Educational Writings) edited by Wichard Lange, was published in 1861. The Fragment must date to or before 1852, the year Froebel died.

The same method is also described in 'Kindergarten Practice' by Mary Gurney, which is a substantially abridged version, in two parts, of 'Die Praxis Des Kindergartens' by Auguste Koehler. The second part, 'Froebel's Plane Surfaces', contains sections dealing with paper folding, cutting and weaving. The date of the first edition is not known. The second edition was published in 1877 in London by A N Myers and Co.

In 'Der Kindergarten' by A S Fischer, which was published by Alfred Holder in Wien in 1883, the text describes Froebel's method of folding and cutting an oblong sheet of paper to create four squares and a long strip.

In 'Royal Gifts for the Kindergarten' by Frances Post Van Norstrand and Alice H Putnam, which was published by the Standard Publishing Company in Chicago in 1889.
