Fold, Cut and Fold Chevron Designs

This page attempts to record what is known about the origin and history of a type of design which, for obvious reasons, I call Fold, Cut and Fold Chevron Designs. Please contact me if you know any of this information is incorrect or if you have any other information that should be added. Thank you.

**********

1863

As far as I know this type of design first appears in 'De Kleine Papierwerkers: Volume 2: Wat men uit strookjes papier al vlechten kan' which was published by K H Schadd in Amsterdam in 1863.

1873

Several Chevron Trellis designs also appear in 'Die Praxis Des Kindergartens' by Auguste Koehler, which was published by Herman Bohlau in Weimar in 1873.

**********

1874

Designs for several Chevron Trelisses and for a Chevron Basket appear in 'Spiel und Arbeit' by Hugo Elm, which was published by Verlag und Drud der Otto Spamer in Leipzig in 1874.

**********

1876

A chevron trellis and a cross appear in 'Des Kindes Erste Beschaftigungsbuch' by E Barth and W Niederley, which was first published in Bielefeld and Leipzig, and the foreword of which is dated October 1876.

**********

1877

Several designs for bookmarks made by the Fold and Cut Chevron method appear in 'Kindergarten Practice' by Mary Gurney, a substantially abridged version, in two parts, of 'Die Praxis Des Kindergartens' by Auguste Koehler (see above). The second part, 'Froebel's Plane Surfaces', contains sections dealing with paper folding, cutting and weaving. The date of the first edition is not known. The second edition was published in 1877 in London by A N Myers and Co.

Part 2 'Die Praxis' of 'Theoretisches und praktisches Handbuch der Fröbelschen Erziehungslehre' by Bertha von Marentholtz-Bülow, which was published by George H Wigand in Kassel in 1887, also contains a number of chevron designs.

**********

1882

The same design appears in Part Two of 'The Kindergarten Guide' by Maria Kraus Boelte and John Kraus, which was probably first published by E. Steiger and Company in New York in 1882.

This book also contains instructions for making a Chevron Basket.

**********

'Die Schulwerkstatt' by E Barth and W Niederly, which was published in Bielefeld and Leipzig in 1882, contains the same diagrams as appeared in the authors earlier work (see entry for 1876 above).

**********

1891

The Chevron Trellis and Cross also appear in 'Pleasant Work for Busy Fingers' by Maggie Browne, which was published by Cassell and Company in London in 1891, and which is an English version of 'Des Kindes Erste Beschaftigungsbuch' enhanced by the addition of a few extra designs.

**********

1937

A simplified trellis appears in 'Paper Toy Making' by Margaret Campbell, which was first published by Sir Isaac Pitman and Sons Ltd in London, probably in 1937, although both the Foreword and Preface are dated 1936, which argues that the book was complete at that date.

**********

1960

An example of a Fold , Cut and Fold Chevron Design also appears in 'Paper Folding Fun' by Robert Harbin, which was published by Oldbourne in London in 1960.
