The Basic Packet

1648

This print by Tosa Mitsonobu, which can be dated to 1648, shows a man holding two Basic Packets. Sourced from 'Oru Kikoro', the catalogue of an exhibition on paperfolding history held in Tatsuno City History and Culture Museum in 1999. The text is unclear but seems to state that these particular packets were used to hold make up tools.

This print by Nishikawa Sukenobu, from Volume 1 of 'Hyakunin Joro Shinasadame', which was published in 1723, shows a decorative version of the Basic Packet lying on the floor in front of the woman on the left.

1731

This print by Nishikawa Sukenobu, from Volume 2 of From 'Ehon Tokiwagusa' (Picture Book of the Evergreens), which was published in 1731 also shows a Basic Packet lying on the floor. In this case it seems to be being used as part of a sewing kit.

In this print by Nishikawa Sukenobu, from 'Ehon tamakazura', which was published in 1736, a Basic Packet can be seen lying on the floor in the right hand panel.

Both these prints by Nishikawa Sukenobu, from Volume 1 of 'Jokyo bunsho kagami', which was published in 1742, also show Basic Packets lying on the floor.

This illustration of a decorative version of the Basic packet is taken from 'Onna Shorei Shutaizen' by Tatsunobo Kitao which was published in 1751. Sourced from 'Oru Kikoro', the catalogue of an exhibition on paperfolding history held in Tatsuno City History and Culture Museum in 1999.

Diagrams for a Basic Packet, here called a 'Coin Wrapper' appear in 'Shukou Tebikigusa : Kokumin Kyoiku Origami Yuihimo' by Ishin Nishigaki, which was published by Meguro Shoten in Nagaoka in 1907.

1905

'Shukouka Kyohon : Liron Jishuu Souga Setsumei' by Kikujiro Kiuchi, Rokushiro Uehara and Hideyoshi Okayama, which was published by Shigebei Takase in Chiba in 1905, contains diagrams for a decorative Basic Packet called 'Sesame Bag Two'.

1935

'Origami Moyo, Book One', by Kawarazaki Kodo, which was published by Unsodo in Japan in 1935, contains a print showing two Basic Packets, one of which includes a noshi, which is probably integral to the design.Incense Wrappers. The print is titled 'tsutsumigami' (which means 'wrapping paper').
