Thank you. ********** 1862 According to 'Manuel Theorique de la Reform Educative de Frederic Froebel' by Edward Raoux, there was just one kindergarten open in Spain in 1862:
********** 1879 Manual Teorico-Practico de Educacion Parvulos by D Pedro de Alcantara Garcia, 1879 The 'Manual Teorico-Practico de Educacion Parvulos' by D Pedro de Alcantara Garcia was published in Madrid by the Imprenta del Colegio Nacional de Sordo-mudos y de Ciegos in 1879. It was the winner of a competition for 'a theoretical - practical treatise on teaching pre-school children according to the kindergarten system, known by the name of Froebel' set up by a decree issued by the Ministry of Development on 31st March 1876 (in fact it was the only entry to meet the requirements of the rules). Inter alia there are chapters devoted to the Froebelian occupations of Braiding and Interlacing, Paper Folding and Cutting Out and Mounting. ********** The Institución Libre de Enseñanza (ILE) (Free Institute of Education) was founded in 1876 and was instrumental in organising the first National Pedagogical Congress in 1882 and setting up the Museum of Primary Instruction of Madrid (later renamed the National Pedagogical Museum) in the same year. Pedro de Alcántara García was appointed the interim director until a formal appointment could be made. The intention wa that 'the Museum would contain: models, projects, plans and drawings of Spanish and foreign establishments of primary education, furniture and school supplies, scientific and general teaching material, Froebel gifts – an author, whose pedagogical theories comprised one of the most outstanding signs of ILE identity ... games and a library of primary instruction.' Note: There is no specific mention of paper-folding, or of Froebel's occupations, in this article, but it is evidence of the influence of Froebelian ideas on education in Spain.
