As far as I know this effect was first published in L'Illustration 2563 of 9th April 1892 and then subsequently included in volume 3 of 'La Science Amusante' by Tom Tit (real name Arthur Good) which was published in Paris by Librairie Larousse in 1893.

The same effect occurs in 'Le Livre des Amusettes' by Toto, which was published in Paris by Charles Mendel in 1899.
