| 'Tanoshii
Origami' (Fun Origami) by Akira Yoshizawa was published
by Froebel Kan Co. Ltd in 1963. It is a photographic picture book of
relatively simple designs with folding instructions.
There are also photographs of some more complicated
works. I am grateful to the British Origami Society for allowing me access to a copy of this work. ********** Front and Back Covers The small characters on the front cover say 'Design, photography and commentary by Akira Yoshizawa'. The characters on the back cover are an advert for other books.
********** Frontispiece
********** As is normal with Japanese books the work came in a cardboard sleeve around which was a separate blue 'ribbon'. The wording on the front of the banner says: 'Mainichi Publishing Culture Award Winner '63'.
The wording on the right hand half of the back of the 'ribbon' is written by Tadashi Iizawa and reads, roughly translated: 'Akira Yoshizawa is now an international 'origami artist'. His work is so highly regarded that travelling exhibitions of Yoshizawa's work are being held in various parts of the United States. It is only natural that Yoshizawa has achieved such a global status. It is only through his efforts that origami, which was once merely a children's hobby, has been developed into an art. Nowadays his followers call it creative origami. Yoshizawa is known as the founder of the modern revival of origami. Folding a four-legged animal from a single sheet of paper is a great achievement in the history of origami. His name will live on forever. In addition to the origami pieces featured in this book, he has created many more intricate and beautiful pieces (such as the pelican on the back cover). I hope to see more similar books in the future.'
