Origami Ehon by Okimasa Uchiyama, 1964

'Origami Ehon' (Origami Picture Book) by Okimasa Uchiyama was published by Kokudo Sha in Tokyo in 1964. It is a book of mostly simple designs, both traditional and the author's own, intended to be folded by children, and organised according to (an abbreviated version of) the author's schema of basic forms (ie crease patterns).

Unfortunately, in most cases, the author does not indicate which designs are his own and which he reegards as traditional. Nor does he appear to be aware that some of the traditional designs originated in Western Europe rather than in Japan.

The author presents the designs as a foundation for creativity on the part of his readers.

This page is based on a copy of the 1971 4th Printing which was made available to me by the British Origami Society, to whom my grateful thanks. As far as I know the content of the 4th Printing was identical to that of the 1st.

The work includes a brief biographical note, roughly translated: Born in Tokyo in 1912. Graduated from the Department of Western Philosophy, Faculty of Letters, Waseda University, 1935. Around the same time he became a teacher at Miyazaki Kokyo Seminary. In the same year he became a monk and was ordained by Master Swaki Kodo, who he has attended ever since. Lives in Antaji Temple, Omiya Gentokucho, Kita-ku, Kyoto, where he practises Zen meditation. Since I was a child I have been enjoying creating origami as a hobby, inheriting it from my grandmother and father.'
