A design called 'Artesa' (Trough) that is probably The Trough appears in 'Ciencia Recreativa' by Jose Estralella, which was published by Gustavo Gili in Barcelona in 1918. No illustration of the finished figure is provided.

As far as I am aware this variant of the Pig design first appears, as 'La artesa' in 'El Mundo de Papel' by Dr Nemesio Montero, which was published by G Miranda in Edicions Infancia in Valladolid in 1939.

The Trough also appears in 'Secrets of Origami', by Robert Harbin, which was published by Oldbourne Book Company in London in 1964, as a 'Crib' for the baby Jesus as part of Ligia Montoya's creche sequence.
