In Japan (and in books by Japanese authors)

1905

Instructions for making a paper bag appear in 'Shukoka Kyoju Saian' by Gentaro Tanahashi and Hideyoshi Okayama, which was published by Hobunkan in Tokyo in 1905.

In Europe and the Americas

1936

The same design appears:

As 'Vieredige Tute' (Four-sided Bag) in 'Allerlei Papierarbeiten' by Hilde Wulff and Carola Babick, which was published in Leipzig and Berlin in 1936. The text says this is 'a real merchant's bag' finshed by gluing the bottom together.

As 'Bolsa de tendero' in 'El Plegado de Papel: 4th Cuaderno de Trabajos Manuales', which was published anonymously by J Ortiz in Madrid around 1936.
