The earliest publication of this effect that I know of is in 'After the Dessert' by Martin Gardner, which was published by Max Holden in New York in 1941.

The effect can also be found in 'Willane's Wizardry' by Willane, which was pubished by ARCAS, in London, and has a foreword dated 1947.
