Le Colonel Chabert by Honore Balzac, 1832 | |||||||
'Le Colonel Chabert' by Honore Balzac was first published in 1832. It contains mention 'hannetons enfermes ... dans les cornets de papier'. ********** In the original French Roughly translated the relevant passage says: 'making ... the sound of a hundred cockchafers locked up by schoolchildren in paper cones' ********** In the English translation by Clara Bell It is interesting to note that in this translation, from 1897, 'Cornet de papier' has been translated as 'paper cages' as if, perhaps, potential readers would not recognise the idea that cockchafers should be imprisoned in paper cones. ********** |
