| Cartoon in Jeremias of 31st January 1869 | |||||||
This cartoon shows a young man making Cocotte / Pajaritas. The wording underneath identifies them as 'pajaritas de papel'. Juan Gimeno has kindly provided this commnetary to explain the cartoon's meaning: 'The scene, engraved by Francisco Ortego, depicts the former Queen Isabel II of Spain and her consort, Francisco de Asís de Borbón (who was openly gay, but was married to his cousin to maintain the Borbon name of the dynasty). He's busy making paper birds (a trivial task befitting a king-consort). Because of his sexual orientation, he was nicknamed "Paquita Natillas" (Little Custard Paquita).The "fusion" being discussed refers to the attempt by the parties seeking to replace the Spanish government to unite their forces to govern. Luis González-Brabo (the man with the mustache) was the last Prime Minister under Isabel II."La madre o monja de las Llagas" is Sister Patrocinio, famous for her alleged stigmata and her influence with Queen Isabel II.' **********
