Studies in Invalid Occupation by Susan E Tracy, 1910 | |||||||
'Studies in Invalid
Occupation' by Susan E Tracy was published by Whitcomb
and Barrows in Boston in 1910. Inter alia, it contains
sections on paper folding and paper cutting. A full copy of the work can be found here. This book mentions some other sources of paperfolding designs: 'Scientific Paper Folding' by Prof David Smith of Teacher's College, New York City, is possibly a reference to the 1901 edition of T Sundara Row's 'Geometrical Exercises in Paper Folding, published by The Open Court Publishing Company in Chicago, of which David Eugene Smith was one of the editors. I cannot trace a separate book called 'Scientific Paperfolding' published under his name. Unfortunately, at present, I also cannot trace dates for, or details of, either a series of books on paperfolding by Kate F Hobart, or any books by Mr K Kinonchi of the Kyoto Normal School. ********** The designs explained in this book are: Dory 1 (from a square) - The Keelboat ********** Dory 2 (from a square) - a version of the Paper Boat folded from a square. .********** Dory 3 - the Paper Boat No illustration but this is clearly the standard Paper Boat from an oblong. ********** Sailboat - The Sailboat Note that the text makes clear that 'Turn up inside' means 'Turn up behind' ********** The Catamaran or Double Boat No illustration provided but the instructions on page 30 are clearly for this design. ********** The Gondola No illustration provided but the instructions on page 30 are clearly for this design. ********** The Chinese Junk
No illustration provided but the instructions on page 31 are clearly for this design. ********** The Nantucket Sink - The Sanbo on Legs
********** The Flying Bird - The Flapping Bird Said to be of Japanese origin. The author seems to confuse this design with the Paper Crane when she writes: ********** The Japanese Frog - The Blow-up Frog ********** Paper Lanterns - The Fold and Cut Paper Lantern No illustration but the desription is clear. ********** Apple Seed Mousetraps - The Fold and Slit Cage No illustration but this is clearly a version of the Fold and Slit Cage design. ********** May Baskets - the Woven Heart Basket No illustration but this is clearly the Woven Heart Basket, initially made without rounding off the corners to create the heart shape. ********** Jacob's Ladder - The Witch's Ladder No illustration but this is clearly the Witch's Ladder used as a handle for the May Baskets. ********** Another May Basket - The Spanish Box No illustration but this design is clearly a simple version of the Spanish Box, but without the pleated decorations. **********
