The section about Ausschneiden in the second revised and enlarged edition of 'Kleiner Kindergarten' by Karl Schellner, which was published by Alfred Holder in Vienna in 1880, describes how Lebensformen with bilateral symmetry (such as the ladder shown, but also 'tables, benches, trees etc') can be cut from singly folded sheets of paper.

The second edition of 'Spiel und Arbeit' by Hugo Elm, which was published by Verlag und Drud der Otto Spamer in Leipzig in 1885, contains illustrations of free cutting designs.
