Paper Wicks

Lamps with paper wicks are mentioned, in a rather derogatory context, in The Lady's Book (aka as Godey's Lady Book) of January 1832, in a story entitled 'Frank Finlay' by Miss Leslie of Philadelphia. Pompey was presumably a black slave or servant.
