It appears that the manufacture and use of folding paper umbrellas began in China and spread from there to Korea, Japan and perhaps other Asian countries.

The Evidence

According to 'Science and Civilisation in China, Volume 5, Part 1: Paper and Printing' by Tsien Tsuen-Hsuin, which was published by Cambridge University Press in 1985, foding paper umbrellas were in use in China from the late 4th or early 5th century onwards.
