Designs folded from Slit Bases

This page attempts to record what is known about the history of Designs Folded from Slit Bases. Please contact me if you know any of this information is incorrect or if you have any other information that should be added. Thank you.

As far as I know the technique of folding from a slit base first appears in the 'Orikata Tehon Chushingura' is a two page manuscript dating from 1797, which shows how to fold and display characters for the famous Japanese story called the Chushingura (Treasury of Loyal Retainers).

The technique is also extensively used in the 'Kan No Mado' ms, which dates from 1845.
