There are fundamentally two different designs of this kind, those in which the finished design is held together by glue and those in which it is held in place by a system of interlocking tabs and pockets. ********** Designs held together by glue Polyhedra constructed from irregular nets - 1509 onwards ********** Cardboard Modelling Designs - 1802 onwards ********** Envelopes from irregular templates - 1897 onwards 'Teacher's Manual for the Prang Course in Drawing for Graded Schools, Books 1-6', by John S Clark, Mary Dana Hicks, Walter S Perry, which was published by the Prang Educational Company in Boston, New York and Chicago in 1897, contains a brief history of envelopes and refers to an irregular template at the end of the book (not seen) from which an envelope can be folded. ********** More detail about this design appears in 'Teacher's Manual for the Prang Elementary Course in Art Instruction Books 1 and 2 Third Year', by John S Clark, Mary Dana Hicks, Walter S Perry, which was published by The Prang Educational Company in Boston, New York and Chicago in 1898. ********** Designs held together by interlocking tabs and pockets The Catherine of Cleves Box - 1440 onwards ********** The Mailing Envelope - 1888 onwards A design for a 'box' (which we would now call a mailing envelope) appears in the 'Teacher's Manual for Prang's Shorter Course in Form Study and Drawing', by John S Clark, Mary Dana Hicks and Walter S Perry, which was published by The Prang Educational Company in Boston, New York and Chicago in 1888. This design also appears in: 'Part 1 for Prang's Complete Course in Form Study and Drawing Books I and II' by John S Clark, Mary Dana Hicks and Walter S Perry, which was published by the The Prang Educational Company in Boston, New York and Chicago in 1890 ********** 'Teacher's Manual for the Prang Course in Drawing for Graded Schools, Books 1-6', by John S Clark, Mary Dana Hicks, Walter S Perry, which was published by the Prang Educational Company in Boston, New York and Chicago in 1897. ********** 1897 'Teacher's Manual for the Prang Course in Drawing for Graded Schools, Books 1-6', by John S Clark, Mary Dana Hicks, Walter S Perry, which was published by the Prang Educational Company in Boston, New York and Chicago in 1897, also contains a way of constructing a basket from two irregular tempates. The text also refers to a 'box with a separate cover' made in a similar way. ********** 1939 A 'Paper Box' folded from an irregular template and held together by tabs and pockets appears' in 'Fun with Paper' by Joseph Leeming, which was published by Spencer Press Inc in Chicago in 1939.
