| Bilaterally Symmetric Representational Fold and Cut Designs | |||||||
This page is being used to collect information about the history of Bilaterally Symmetric Representational Fold and Cut Designs. Please contact me if you know any of this information is incorrect or if you have any other information that should be added. Thank you. There is a separate page for Fold, Cut and Fold Animals and for The Sister of Charity. Please note that this index page is incomplete at present since I was not originally recording instances of this kind of design. ********** 1880 The section about Ausschneiden in the second revised and enlarged edition of 'Kleiner Kindergarten' by Karl Schellner, which was published by Alfred Holder in Vienna in 1880, describes how Lebensformen with bilateral symmetry (such as the ladder shown, but also 'tables, benches, trees etc') can be cut from singly folded sheets of paper.
********** 1885 The second edition of 'Spiel und Arbeit' by Hugo Elm, which was published by Verlag und Drud der Otto Spamer in Leipzig in 1885, contains illustrations of free cutting designs.
********** 1891 'Education of Head and Hand' by Gabriel Bamberger, which was published by A Flanagan in Chicago in 1891, is a compilation of six manuals about manual work in schools. The third manual is lartgely about Froebel's occupation of Ausschneiden und Aufkleben but also includes some examples of symmetrical free-cutting designs. ********** |
