Surprise Denouement Designs

Surprise denouement designs are designs in which the folding sequence is so arranged, or so arranges itself, that the subject of the design is not obvious until the end of the sequence is reached. The surprise denouement may be the result of a final revealing fold, a collapse or simply turning over a design which has been folded face down.

I am very fond of designs of this kind, though they are hard to create. They emphasise the importance of the folding sequence without de-emphasising the importance of the final result. They are also a useful antidote to the idea, unfortunately increasingly common at origami conventions, that you should know the subject of a design before the teaching of it commences.

See-through designs, which are a type of surprise denouement design, are not included here since they deserve a page all to themselves. Many double-image designs also fall into this category. They too have a page of their own.

Any single-sheet 1-fold design is, of course, also necessarily a surprise denouement design.
