On the perils of persistence

A fly who never learned to fly

went up in an aeroplane.

He thought he really ought to try

to fly just once again.

'Get ready to jump when the green light shows'.

his flying instructor said.

'Check that your parachute is tight,

count ten then pull that thread.'

He clutched the thread and jumped

into the clear blue sky.

He floated gently through the air.

At last he'd learned to fly!

'I can fly!' he shouted to the clouds,

'Boom boom!' they shouted back.

But when he landed on the ground

his parachute squashed him flat.
