As far as I know the first appearance of this design is in 'Fun with Paperfolding' by William D Murray and Francis J Rigney was published by the Fleming H Revell Company, New York in 1928. This particular version of the design was developed from a Paper Boat folded from a rectangle, the sail being tucked to one side underneath one of the internal flaps.
