Compound Modular Designs

Compound modular designs are modular designs created by combining modules of two or more designs irrespective of whether these modules are integrated into sub-assemblies (compound modules) or not. Where the modules which make up such designs are all folded using the same folding geometry they may be called simple compound designs. Where the modules are folded using differing folding geometries they may be called hybrid compound designs.

Simple Compound Designs

Name: Gyroscope - a skeletal octahedron with a small hole in the centre. As the name implies, the Gyroscope can be used as an action toy.

Modules / Paper shape / Folding geometry: 12 modules in two sets of six from squares using standard folding geometry.

Designer / Date: Lewis Simon, c1970s

Diagrams: Not yet available.

Name: Three-Way Brick - can be linked into other similar bricks in all three directions. A rhombic dodecahedron from which twelve small rhombic pyramids have been removed.

Modules / Paper shape / Folding geometry: 12 modules in two sets of six from silver rectangles.

Designer / Date: David Mitchell, 1996.

Diagrams: Not yet available.

  Name: Stellated Rhombic Dodecahedron

Modules / Paper shape / Folding geometry: 24 modules in two sets of twelve from silver rectangles. Made by adding 'hats' in the formn of rhombic pyramids to the modules for Nick Robinson's Rhombic Dodecahedron.

Designer / Date: David Mitchell, 1997.

Diagrams: In Mathematical Origami - Tarquin Publications - ISBN 1-899618-18-X.

  Name: Borromean Links

Modules / Paper shape / Folding geometry: 12 modules in 2 sets of 6 using standard folding geometry, based on division into fifths.

Designer / Date: David Mitchell, 1999. A version of Thoki Yenn's Umulius Rectangulum.

Diagrams: Not yet available.

  Name: Q - a three layered kusudama.

Modules / Paper shape / Folding geometry: 18 modules from squares using standard folding geometry, in three layers of 6 modules each.

Designer / Date: David Mitchell, 2001.

Diagrams: In Paper Crystals (2nd Edition) - Water Trade - ISBN 978-0-9534774-9-4.

Name: Double Diagonal Stripe Cubes - variations of the Paul Jackson Cube that can be assembled from the same set of compound modules.

Modules / Paper shape / Folding geometry: 6 compound modules, each from two squares using standard folding geometry.

Designer / Date: David Mitchell, 2001.

Diagrams: In Building with Butterflies (2nd Edition) - Water Trade - ISBN 978-9534774-7-0.

  Name: Six Intersecting Rhombic Tetrahedra

Modules / Paper shape / Folding geometry: 36 modules of two different kinds, all folded from silver rectangles, 12 tubes and 24 joining pieces.

Designer / Date: David Mitchell, 1999.

Diagrams: Not yet available.

Hybrid Compound Designs

  Name: Alternative Artifact

Modules / Paper shape / Folding geometry: 12 in two sets of 6 modules, one set from squares using standard folding geometry and the other set from silver rectangles.

Designer / Date: David Mitchell, 1995.

  Name: Odyssey

Modules / Paper shape / Folding geometry: Made by adding 30 strengtheners to a 30 module Cube-Corner Dodecahedron. Strengtheners from silver rectangles, other modules from squares using standard folding geometry.

Designer / Date: David Mitchell, 2015.
